Designing for the Human Margin: Where Judgment Still Matters

Designing for the Human Margin: Where Friction Creates Trust

Designing for the Human Margin examines how design must evolve as AI accelerates our ability to build faster than ever before. As frictionless systems and invisible interfaces become the default, this talk argues that the role of design is no longer to remove friction at all costs, but to deliberately place it where human judgment, control and understanding are essential.

Working at the intersection of AI, cybersecurity and high-stakes environments, the talk reframes design maturity as outcome-driven rather than speed-driven. It challenges teams to question shallow automation and to design systems that prioritise trust, clarity and accountability over throughput and novelty.

This talk offers teams a shared language for navigating AI-led change with intention rather than urgency. The perspective introduced here is extended through a corresponding workshop that translates the Human Margin into a practical method for decision-making and alignment.
